Care And Maintenace

Good floor relies not only on the quality of floor or good craftsmanship, but also on care and maintenace. Here are some tips during use.

Cleaning

  • For daily cleaning, vacuum or sweep the floor, or wipe with a damp mop or cloth. Dusting, mopping or sweeping the floor will minimize abrasive grit and dirt. The mop or wiping cloth should be well wrung out to remove all excess water.
  • Minor spillages should be moped up promptly. Remove stains when fresh where possible.
  • Pre-mix in a spray bottle one (1) part methylated spirits, the (10) parts water which can be sprayed onto an anti-static mop and wiped over the floor. Kempas timber can be refurbished by sanding and recoating.

Scratches

  • Like all wooden floors, it will scratch. This is a feature of all timber floors. It can be minimized by precautions such as removing shoes, using rubber stoppers on all furniture legs or using a good doormat at each entrance.

Protecting

  • Use quality area rugs and doormats by outdoor entrance areas to prevent dirt, sand, grit and other substances such as oil, asphalt or driveway sealer from being tracked onto your floor.
  • Use floor protectors and wide-bearing leg bases/rollers to minimize indentations from heavy objects. As a rule of thumb, the heavier the item, the thicker/wider the floor protector should be.
  • Do not walk on the timber floor with stiletto-heeled shoes.
  • Avoid gouges or cuts into your floor from sharp objects. Small objects dropped from a height have immense impact pressure and such impacts should be avoided.
  • Never try to slide or roll heavy objects across the floor without precautions.
  • Rolling loads from castors under furniture and trolleys will damage the surface. The smaller the castor the greater the likelihood of damage occurring.
  • Keep pets nails trimmed.
  • Rearrange rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly.
  • Remember that a wooden floor's worst enemy is damp so never over-wet your timber floor.
  • It is recommended that polishes be applied every six (6) months.
